George
Merryweather, Vice Chairman of NAMGAR, had a rather unfortunate tangle with
a Semi in Kentucky on his way home to Texas from the NAMGAR Regional GT in
Key West. George is fine but his MGA did not fair so well. George had put
together an MGA for his son Matt and they drove both cars to Key West (from
Dallas) and at the conclusion of the NAMGAR Regional in Key West, George in
his A, Matt in his A and Sue and I in our A, drove to Lexington and spent
Monday night at Matt and his wife's home. Sue and I headed north this morning
and George headed west (back to Texas). At about 1:30, while driving south
on I-65 just outside of Bowling Green, KY he was hit. George said that he
was travelling in the right hand (slow lane), a normal distance ahead of a
semi doing about 65 mph. Another semi passed the semi behind George and when
the front (steering) wheel of the tractor was beside George, the driver started
to merge into the slow lane. (George believes that the driver simply thought
that he had passed the semi and was pulling in, in front of it...forgetting
that George was there). The lug nuts from the wheel hit the A between the
drivers front wheel and the door. When the driver realized that something
was there...he pulled to the left but dragged George and the A with him. As
George tried to steer to the right (to break away from the semi), they came
apart after the semi's wheel tore apart the driver's door. George explained
that he still was moving down I-65 in the right direction...only now the front
of the A was pointed toward 4:00 (on a clock...as opposed to 12:00). The front
driver's fender hit the guard rail (on the slow lane side of the road), and
the car finally came to rest blocking traffic in the slow lane. George was
towing a small trailer and even though the tongue was still attached to the
car...the rest of it disintegrated. The semi...after they came unlocked...verred
into the median and became stuck
